Somewhere around the four hundredth bedtime, invention fails and every story becomes the one about the dog again. Draw a prompt and improvise from there: children care far less about the plot than about it being made up for them on the spot. Thirty openings deliberately vague enough to go anywhere, and short enough to read off a phone in a dark room. Let the child draw and the story gets better, because now they are invested in where it goes.
