Tree identification is the rare skill that permanently changes an ordinary walk, because once you can name six species you cannot stop reading the hedgerow. Draw a tree and go and find one: leaf shape, bark texture, and what the seed does are usually enough. Thirty-five species common enough across temperate regions to be findable. Children take to this faster than adults and become insufferable about it within a fortnight, which is entirely the goal.
